Teaching Philosophy

UMBC

Educational outreach has been a vital aspect of Dr. Airi Yoshioka’s professional life through her work as a teaching artist for the New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center Institute. In addition, she has taught music at New York City public schools through the Morse Fellowship program and has performed in hospitals, hospices, and nursing homes as a recipient of the Community Service Fellowship. In October, 2004, she organized Art Reach!, a three-day symposium on effectiveness of arts outreach. The highly successful occasion brought together teachers, teaching artists, administrators, and community leaders from Maryland. Currently, she is Professor of Violin at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

InterPlay, a collaboration between the Peabody Institute and University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), began in 2016 to connect Peabody graduate students with UMBC undergraduate music majors. The partnership has evolved to include two mentored professional experiences for Peabody graduate students: an innovative, interactive performance in Linehan Concert Hall, UMBC’s main theater, and a four-session teaching project in collaboration with UMBC faculty. Teaching projects to date have included master classes, lessons for specified instruments, chamber music coaching, orchestral sectionals, audition preparation seminars, improvisation workshop, and mock audition panels.

During the semester, participants will take part in an 8-contact hour independent study overseen by UMBC faculty mentor Dr. Airi Yoshioka to explore strategies for interactive performances and develop and market their own performance presentations. Participants will execute their teaching projects in collaboration with UMBC and Peabody mentors.

Interplay 2020-21 participants will receive reimbursement for all travel expenses, and a $500 stipend. In addition to valuable teaching and performance experience, participants also receive mentorship from both Peabody and UMBC faculty, as well as feedback on teaching and performance projects from students and audiences.
